Normal Kidney Size

What is the Normal Kidney Size?

Doctors presume that people have understood the structure of the kidneys. There are times when you seem to argue about the results of the radiology tests. The doctors will more likely say what is wrong, rather than saying what would be the normal thing is. Without the knowledge of what normal is, you will get to confuse of ho to recognize something that is abnormal, like with the normal kidney size.

Kidney size does not depend on the body shape. The development of the kidneys has the same rate with the development of the whole body.  The physical growth will stop at 25 to26. The internal organs seem to stop their development at the same time, and they are reaching their final dimension.

The average kidney size, once it is fully developed, has a length of 12 cm, breadth of 6 cm, and the thickness of 3 cm. The kidney weighs an average of 120 to 150 grams. If the kidney decreased from this size, they are considered to be abnormal. However, when the kidney increased in size, it is considered to be a normal kidney. The kidney increases in size during the condition of the removal of the other kidney. The kidney that remained would expand in order to recompense the absence of the function of the removed kidney.

The anatomy of the human kidney is quite simple when observed. However, the functions that the kidney runs are complex and vital functions. If one of the kidney’s regions in injured or affected by a disease, it will affect the capability of the kidney to run the functions.

The normal size of the kidney is like the human fist size. In spite of this, the kidneys tend to have cyst, because of the attendance of PKD. There can be few cysts or there can be many of them. The size of the cysts will vary, from the size of a pinhead to a grapefruit size. If a lot of cysts grow in the kidneys, the organ will develop a size of a football and can weigh as much 38 pounds for each kidney.

Based on the autopsy studies, the kidney size, the dimensions and weight, varies depending on the gender. The kidney weighs more in males than in females. The right kidney is smaller than the left one, regardless of the gender. The weight of the kidney will decrease for up to 40% over the years, mainly because of the parenchymal disease. It can also decrease due to the blood supply. The dimensions of the kidneys will also differ based on the ethnic populations.

You should be aware of the normal kidney size, so that when you feel like something’s wrong and you need to consult a doctor, you will know whether it is abnormal or not. Through that, you will be aware of what is really wrong with your organ, and be able to say that it is abnormal, rather than not knowing what the normal kidney should be.
