Kidney Scarring

What Causes the Kidney Scarring?

The kidneys are filtering waste products in the blood. They produce hormones that are necessary in the functions of the body. However, when the kidneys are damaged, it will lead to wound healing response. It will result to scarred tissue. Once the tissues are scarred, the tendency is that the functional tissues will be lost, something that is very important with the excretion of the waste products. The damage in the kidney will progress as there will be inability to filter the waste products and maintain the essential nutrients and balance in the body. With that, kidney scarring will happen.

Kidney scarring is assumed when there is an elevated urine protein, which is called serum creatinine. But, you cannot really know the reasons behind this kidney disease, unless the doctor performs a biopsy. This is not easy as the doctors cannot request a biopsy right away without the presence of serious symptoms as the procedure is very risky. The patients are left in the dark, as they are clueless on the causes of this disease.

Causes of Kidney Scarring

Diabetes

Between 1993 and 1997, 40% of the patients that are starting to have dialysis are diabetic. This is a disease that caused scarring in the kidney. The scarring will progress and will lead to the failure of the kidney. The occurrence of this kidney disorder that is caused by diabetes is so high that is referred to as the diabetes’ kidney disease.

Obstruction

The kidney obstruction is usually caused by the small stones formation. If these stones are not treated right away, they can cause damage to the kidney. These stones are formed from the minerals in the urine. The stones can block the urine flow, which in turn gives pressure to the kidney. 3.2% of the patients who are having dialysis have stones in kidneys.

Autoimmune Diseases

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is an autoimmune disease, which is caused by the body’s production of antibodies against itself. The antibodies can affect a specific part of the body or can affect several body parts. The autoimmune antibodies are deposited in the kidneys, which can result to inflammatory changes and will lead to kidney scarring.

IgA Nephropathy

The body produces IgA to fight infection. There are diseases that are associated with IgA nephropathy, like celiac diseases, liver diseases and respiratory tract infection. There are studies that show the increased risk of the failure in the kidney in the family related nephrology. As the IgA builds up, inflammation and damage will result in the kidneys. 25% of these patients are more likely to develop chronic renal failure.

Infection

Kidney Scarring can also be caused by the infections. Pyelonephritis is an infection that can be found in the kidneys. This can be an acute, chronic or a relapsing one. Kidney infections are mainly caused by bacteria in the kidney. There are other factors that can contribute to the kidney infections, like the scar tissues, kidney stones, trauma and diabetes. The infection can lead to scar formation and inflammation.
