Everything about Kidney Atrophy

Kidney atrophy is a kidney condition, wherein the kidneys are shrinking in size. This happens because of the loss or inadequate circulation of nephrons. The renal veins and arteries start to shrink, as well, because of the loss of the function of the kidney.

Causes of Kidney Atrophy

Infections, like renal diseases or conditions and acute pyelonephritis, affects the functions of the nephrons that can lead to kidney atrophy.  When the flow of blood to the kidneys continues to become low because of atherosclerosis, the tendency is the atrophic kidney. Other than infections and obstruction in the urinary tract, atrophic kidney can also be caused by reflux nephropathy and other kidney disorders

Renal parenchyma, or the thinning of the kidney’s functional tissues, is also involved in kidney atrophy. This may happen because of the urinary tract obstruction that is the result of the increasing pressure to the tissues. Ischaemia can also cause the atrophic kidney. This condition occurs when there is a compression happening on the intra-renal arteries and veins.

Symptoms of Atrophic Kidney

With such circumstances, the symptoms of an atrophic kidney are similar to the urinary tract infection. Symptoms include blood in he urine, painful urination and frequent urination. These symptoms are the some that you may experience. Kidney pain can also be associated with atrophic kidney. Obstructive uropathy is the interference of the urine flow will lead to the pressure of the back, which can lead to the damage of the nephrons. The damage will cause the chronic loss of the kidney’s function and will lead to the shrinkage of the kidney.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Atrophic Treatment

For doctors to create a treatment plan for this kidney disease, they need to know the underlying reason of this disease. This condition can be diagnosed by different ways. Intravenous urography and sonography cannot be helpful when it comes to the diagnosis of this condition. However, using imaging procedures, like MRI and CT scan, can help with the diagnosis of kidney atrophy

The treatment of the kidney atrophy will depend on the damage the condition has. If the condition is a urinary tract infection case or an acute pyelonephritis, medications can help to relieve the condition. However, if you are experiencing renal failure, dialysis is needed.

Lifestyle change is also needed in order to successfully treat the condition. If you are taking too much alcohol, you needed to cut down the alcohol intake. Alcohol will worsen the condition and will cause damage to the kidneys. You also need to follow a certain diet for kidney disease.
